NATO May Deploy An Allied Forces Corps In Estonia

He might show up in Pärnu.

NATO is considering the possibility of deploying an allied corps consisting of soldiers from Germany and the Netherlands in the Estonian city of Pärnu. This is according to a report published on Saturday, August 2

on the website of local broadcaster ERR, citing Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur. The final decision is expected to be made within the current year.

"This will affect not only our allies in command roles, but also Estonian military personnel, including conscripts," Pevkur said, stressing that for the country's defense forces "this is a strategically significant step." The minister added that when the Allied Corps is stationed in Estonia, it is expected to create infrastructure for almost 200 people, and it is planned to spend 17 million euros on its construction.

The city of Pärnu in the west of the country is considered a suitable option because of its developed logistics. There are a port, an airfield, a railroad, a highway and the settlement itself is close to the Latvian capital Riga. Estonia has been a member of NATO since 2004.
