The US is changing its strategy regarding India.
India has become one of US President Donald Trump's top targets as he seeks to pressure Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to stop the war against Ukraine.
This was reported by Bloomberg on Monday, August 4, analyzing a number of Trump's recent harsh statements regarding India.
Last week, for example, the American leader criticized India for its BRICS membership and close ties with Russia. Specifically, he said that India and Russia "can destroy their dead economies together."
"The outburst marked a stunning change of tone for the U.S., which for years has ignored India's close historical ties with Russia in an effort to enlist the country as a counterweight to China in Asia," Bloomberg writes.
Now, however, Trump may be willing to abandon such a strategy to gain leverage over Putin.
Also last week, the US president told the media that he believes India will no longer buy Russian oil. However, the New York Times, citing its sources, reported that despite Trump's threats of sanctions, India will continue to buy oil from Russia.
Bloomberg also emphasizes that New Delhi is standing up for its relationship with Moscow and there is a "stable and time-tested partnership" between the two countries, according to Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal.
"Our bilateral relations with various countries have their own value and should not be viewed through the prism of a third country," the diplomat said.
Answering a question on relations with the United States, he added that he was confident of their further development.
A US delegation is expected to visit India by the end of the month to negotiate a trade deal after Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on goods from the country.
