New Delhi is gearing up for Trump's secondary sanctions.
India's largest oil refiner Indian Oil Corporation has purchased 7 million barrels of crude oil with delivery in September. This is due to reduced purchases of Russian oil due to sanctions, Reuters reported.
Sources said Indian Oil Corporation bought 4.5 million barrels of U.S. crude, 500,000 barrels of Western Canadian Select and 2 million barrels of Abu Dhabi's Das crude.
In the tender, which closed on August 1, the suppliers of U.S. crude were P66, Equinor, Mercuria and Vitol. Trafigura will supply 2 million barrels of the Das grade.
The prices of the deals were not disclosed. The sources are not authorized to speak to the press and wished to remain anonymous.
Two sources said the high volume of purchases is due to partial replacement of supplies from Russia. India remains the largest buyer of Russian crude transported by sea.
In recent weeks, however, the country's state-owned refineries, including IOC, HPCL, BPCL and MRPL, have suspended crude purchases from Russia. The reason is narrowing price differentials and geopolitical pressure.
U.S. President Donald Trump earlier threatened countries buying oil from Moscow with 100 percent secondary tariffs.
