Acquisition Of Citizenship Simplified For Belarusian Volunteers In Ukraine

The law will take effect in six months.

In order to obtain Ukrainian citizenship, a foreign volunteer will now only need to serve one year under a contract instead of the previous three. This simplification of citizenship acquisition is introduced by the recently adopted in Ukraine amendments to the law on multiple citizenship.

This was announced in a commentary to Hromadske by the acting head of the coordination department for military service of foreigners in the AFU Konstantin Milevsky. He added that "there has been no widespread announcement of this news," and the law itself will come into force in six months.

This and previous amendments on the possibility of applying for Ukrainian citizenship on expired passports concern mainly Belarusian and Russian volunteers. "In 95% of 100 - yes, it will affect them exclusively. After all, it is not a problem for a representative of another country to get another passport if it has expired," Milevsky explained.
