It could fall to an all-time low today.

The Indian rupee may fall below 88 per US dollar today, hitting an all-time low. The reason is new threats by US President Donald Trump to tighten tariffs on Indian goods.

This is reported by Reuters.

The previous record low of 87.95 was recorded in February.

Trump once again accused India of buying and reselling Russian oil, threatening to "significantly increase tariffs" on its goods. India's foreign ministry responded that the country "will take all necessary measures to protect national interests and economic security."

"It remains to be seen whether these attacks from the US are part of a negotiating tactic to change India's position on the war in Ukraine," analysts at MUFG Bank said.

Last week, Trump had already imposed 25 percent tariffs on imports from India - more than expected. Negotiations on a trade agreement between the countries have also stalled.

The rupee weakened amid the worsening sentiment even as the dollar weakened overall. On Monday, the Indian currency failed to sustain its intraday gains to 87.20 and went down again.

"Today was already expected to be a tough day for the rupee, but Trump's fresh threat has only added to the pressure," commented a senior trader at a private bank.
