For buying Russian oil products.
In addition to China and India, which became the main buyers of Russian oil after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Brazil may fall under the American duties. U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Matthew Whitaker said this in an interview with Bloomberg TV.
"Secondary sanctions and duties against China, India and Brazil, which buy oil that Russia produces, are the obvious next step in trying to end the war," Whitaker said.
He said the sanctions, which the White House is preparing after Donald Trump's ultimatum expires, will "really hit" the Russian economy, which derives nearly half of all export revenues from oil and gas sales.
The Russian-Ukrainian conflict can only be resolved diplomatically, not on the battlefield, and Trump is setting the stage for such a settlement, Whitaker emphasized.
Brazil, unlike China and India, does not buy crude oil from Russia. It is, however, the third largest importer of Russian oil products (12%).
