Residents Of The Kursk Region Of The Russian Federation Have Planned A Protest Action

Against the inaction of officials.

Residents of Russia's Kursk region discussed holding an action on August 6, the first anniversary of the AFU invasion, but pressure began to mount on them, "We can explain" found out after reading correspondence in a closed chat room of the Suzhans and talking to residents of the border region.

The residents of Suzhi decided to assemble a symbolic "migrant's house" in the center of Kursk from things that would remind them of their lost homes. Discussions of the action were held in closed neighborhood chat rooms. Residents of other affected border districts - in particular, Glushkovsky district - were also to take part in the action.

"The idea is to bring things from your home: toys, photos, house keys and put them up in some beautiful way. The purpose of the action is to show what people have lost and once again draw attention to the lack of normal assistance from the state," a resident of Glushkovsky district, who was going to take part in the action, told "MO".

As a result of the AFU invasion, more than 100 thousand residents of the border region were forced to leave their homes. Many of them lost contact with their relatives and did not evacuate in the first days of the offensive because of reassuring statements by the authorities. For more than half a year, Kursk refugees went to rallies to draw attention to their problems: failed evacuations and lack of compensation for lost housing.

Shortly after the rally discussions began, Archpriest Evgeny Shestopalov, rector of the Holy Trinity Church in Suja, recorded a video in which he condemned the idea of gathering for a rally and called instead to go to the church "to pray for the warriors." "The anniversary of August 6 is no reason to rally and again shout about ourselves, that everyone has forgotten about us. Who are we? The whole of Russia is at war here... We should go to the temple! Quietly take candles and pray. About the neighbors who died, about the soldiers who laid down their heads defending us and liberating our land. And not shouting, stomping their feet and demanding more dough. What they are going to do (to go to the rally) is a disgrace to the whole of Russia and the whole world!"

Even in the winter of 2024, Shestopalov criticized regional authorities and blamed them for the failed evacuation. However, after a personal meeting with Putin in the spring of 2025, he changed his rhetoric. At the end of the current video message, the priest admits that before the message he talked to officials: "visited the administration, listened to what they say and think about us."

Whether the protest action will take place tomorrow is unknown. Judging by the discussions in the Suja chat room, people have changed their minds about building the "house of the resettler", but are discussing other formats that do not fall under the definition of a rally.
