Ion Iliescu

He played a key role in overthrowing the Ceausescu regime.

Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu has died after nearly two months in hospital, the government said. He was 95 years old.

"It is with deep regret that we announce the death of former Romanian President Ion Iliescu. The former President of Romania passed away today, August 5, 2025, at the Professor Agrippa Ionescu Clinical Emergency Hospital. The Romanian government expresses its condolences to the family and all loved ones," the statement said.

According to the medical center, the death occurred at 15:55 local time (coinciding with Minsk time). Hospital officials noted that during the 57 days of the former Romanian president's hospitalization, doctors made every effort to provide him with the necessary care and treatment.

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolhogan said that during Iliescu's rule, decisions were made that had a significant impact on Romania's development, including the Snagov Declaration and the law on the revision of the Constitution. The government said details of the program of the farewell ceremony organized in honor of the former head of state will be announced later.

Iliescu was born on March 3, 1930 in the small Romanian town of Oltenice. After graduating from the Bucharest Polytechnic Institute and the Moscow Energy Institute in the 1950s, he decided to enter politics and joined the Romanian Communist Party. Iliescu became president of Romania twice: in 1990-1996 after the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu and in 2000-2004. In early June 2025, he was admitted to intensive care, where he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Since that time, the former president has been in intensive care under the supervision of doctors.
