François Bayrou plans to cut the budget by more than 43 billion euros.
French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou on Tuesday published the first video on his YouTube channel designed to explain his government's policies, particularly unpopular budget cuts, to the public.
The Politico reported.
Bayrou's videos will be published on a YouTube channel called FB Direct (the first two letters are the initials of the French prime minister).
In the first video, he said he was not going on summer vacation because the coming days are "extremely important" for France, and called for understanding the government's need to cut budget spending.
"When you are forced to take out loans - not to buy a house, an apartment, furniture or a car, but simply to pay for everyday expenses - when you are forced to take out loans and cannot pay them back without going to the bank every month for an additional loan that becomes more and more expensive - this is called over-indebtedness," Bayrou said.
The French prime minister hopes citizens will be willing to at least hear him out by watching YouTube videos while on vacation.
"The purpose of this direct communication is for you to form your own opinion. I am sure there is no other way," he believes.
The Bayrou government plans to cut France's budget deficit from 5.8 percent of GDP last year to 4.6 percent in 2026. For this purpose, the draft budget presented by Bayrou envisages significant spending cuts of more than 43 billion euros.
The French prime minister's proposal to cancel two public holidays to make them working days caused particular outrage.
With this background, the French prime minister has become the most unpopular head of government in the country's modern history.
