Ultimatum Expires: US Prepares Strike On Russian Federation

It's become known what move the Trump administration is considering.

The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering imposing additional sanctions on a "shadow fleet" of Russian oil tankers if Russian leader Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine by Friday, August 8. This is according to Financial Times (FT).

The blacklisting of vessels from this fleet would be the first time the US has imposed sanctions on Moscow since Trump returned to the White House. Russia uses a shadow fleet of mostly older tankers to transport oil around the world in an attempt to circumvent Western restrictions imposed after a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Revenues from exporting this oil help finance the war.

The FT article said sanctions against tankers have proved effective. The publication's analysis of 115 tankers hit by US sanctions for transporting Russian oil shows that the frequency of the vessels' use has dropped significantly. However, sanctions against tankers will not push for a complete abandonment of Russian oil like 100% duties for buying countries.

Kremlin has ignored a series of deadlines set by the US president for a ceasefire agreement and has significantly stepped up its attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks. Trump has become increasingly frustrated with his Russian counterpart, and people close to the administration have said that "Moscow will pay if it doesn't come to the negotiating table."

A source close to the Trump administration said a final decision on further measures against Moscow will be made after Special Envoy Whitkoff returns to Washington. "It will all depend on what he comes back with. If he comes back with nothing, Trump will be furious," the source told the FT.
