Another major ship of the Russian Navy may be scrapped.
The repair and modernization of the Admiral Chabanenko large anti-submarine ship, which was part of the Russian Northern Fleet and sent for reconstruction back in 2014, will not be completed in 2025, as expected. This was reported by Izvestia sources, who found it difficult to name a specific timeframe for completing the work and taking the ship out for exercises, writes The Moscow Times.
The work is being carried out at the 35th Ship Repair Plant, which spent seven years repairing the only aircraft carrier in the Russian Navy, the cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov, which was eventually sent for preservation. Despite the fact that the Admiral Chabanenko was planned to be fitted with modern missile armament, reclassifying it as a frigate, the ship may suffer the same fate as the Kuznetsov, military expert Dmitri Boltenkov said. "It all depends on how the navy decides. Conservation is definitely a write-off in a few years. Then no one will deal with it anymore," he said.
His opinion is agreed by Ilya Kramnik of the Center for Strategic Planning Studies of IMEMO RAN, who noted that "there is a probability" of the Chabanenko's mothballing. He said the plant 35, which repairs the BPC, is "a graveyard of ships where work deadlines are regularly disrupted," leading to criminal cases. The enterprise "is not in the best condition" - both in terms of production capabilities and the level of personnel and management. "Plus there is an objective external reason: we have slashed spending on a number of fleet programs. Both underfunding and the plant's not the best condition lead to the fact that first the repairs were delayed to absolutely indecent terms, and now the deadline for transferring the ship to the fleet is constantly being moved to the right," the expert said.
The United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) ignored a request for comment.
The mothballing of the Kuznetsov aircraft carrier may free up funds to complete repairs of the Admiral Chabanenko, believes military expert Captain First Rank Captain First Rank Vasily Dandykin, who noted that there is a shortage of ship repair capacity in the country.
Boltenkov also noted that there are some grounds to hope for successful completion of the Chabanenko repair, and cited the example of the BPC Vice-Admiral Kulakov, which was repaired for about 20 years. As a result, it did go to sea. "If we modernize "Admiral Chabanenko", it will not be a bad ship. All the same, no large ships are expected for the Northern Fleet in the coming years. Therefore, it is better to finish its repair", - stated the expert.
"Admiral Chabanenko" project 1155.1 was laid down in 1989, but due to the collapse of the USSR it was launched only by the end of the 90's. In 2009-2010, the ship controlled the safety of navigation in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden. It is armed with Moskit anti-ship missiles, Kinzhal anti-aircraft systems (64 missiles), Vodopad anti-submarine missile and torpedo system and a number of other modules, and is also equipped with Zvezda-2 hydroacoustic system and radio-electronic means.
