How Drones And The "points System" Are Changing The Rules Of Combat In Ukraine

The future of warfare is in technology.

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has managed to transform the course of the war into a technological confrontation. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become a central element of defense, and the approach to warfare has begun to resemble an innovative startup, writes National Security Journal (translated by Charter97.org).

The Ukrainian army has created separate drone units, completely refocused procurement on commercial technology, and accelerated the implementation cycle of new solutions to a few months. Now even small ideas can be quickly implemented in combat.

A UAV pilot with the call sign "Bandera" from the 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade says the drones perform reconnaissance, fire correction, ammunition transportation and even strikes against the enemy without risk to operators.

One of the architects of the new system is Robert "Magyar" Brovdi, a businessman turned commander of the Unmanned Systems Force. His unit "Magyar's Birds" destroyed 8% of all Russian armored vehicles.

The main weapon was an FPV drone, and the main know-how was a reward system for destroyed vehicles. Since August 2024, each recorded attack is evaluated in points: the more valuable the target (for example, a T-90M tank), the higher the reward. Points can be exchanged for new drones and equipment.

The system is implemented in the Brave1 Market platform, which allows fighters to directly order the necessary equipment. As the situation on the frontline changes, the evaluation criteria are updated - for example, a recent update emphasized the importance of killing enemy drone operators.

Despite the risks of inequality between experienced and new units, Ukrainian fighters find the approach effective. It motivates and optimizes processes.
