Trump is facing a choice.
The ultimatum issued by US President Donald Trump to Putin over a ceasefire in Ukraine expires next Friday. Originally set for 50 days, the deadline has been abruptly reduced to 10. If the conditions are ignored, the US threatens to apply tough economic measures - no military intervention is planned because of Russia's nuclear arsenal, writes Bloomberg (translated by Charter97.org).
The Trump administration is considering the option of imposing secondary sanctions against countries that buy Russian energy resources. These are, above all, China and India - Moscow's key trading partners. The Senate has already prepared a bill that would impose duties of up to 500% on such countries. Trump proposes a more moderate 100%, but the effect may be similar: deterioration of relations with potential allies.
India, despite its participation in the anti-China Quad alliance, is determined. After the U.S. imposed 25% duties on Indian goods, New Delhi took a tough stance in response to threats of secondary sanctions. China, for its part, has long considered the U.S. a major geopolitical rival and continues to strengthen its strategic partnership with Russia.
With the situation escalating, Trump has sent special envoy Steve Whitkoff to Moscow for talks. But the prospect that both Russia and its allies will ignore U.S. threats puts Washington in a choice: either back down and look weak, or move to even tougher measures that the U.S. is not prepared to use.
As former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz used to say, "Don't point a rifle unless you're ready to shoot." Today that metaphor is more relevant than ever.
