Brazil's Former President Has Been Placed Under House Arrest
JAIR BOLSONARU.

For "bad social media behavior."

Brazil's Supreme Court has placed former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest after he violated previous restrictions imposed on his use of social media for political purposes. This is reported by BILD.

Judge Alexandre de Morais accuses Bolsonaro of intentionally influencing the country's political debate through social media. Thus, with the help of his supporters, including his three sons, who are represented in parliament, he spread content that "incited attacks on the court and demanded foreign intervention."

Bolsonaro must serve his house arrest at his residence and is only allowed visits from lawyers and close relatives. He must also surrender all cell phones and continue to wear an electronic anklet on his leg.

All restrictions are related to the ongoing trial against Bolsonaro. The former president must face justice for complicity in an attempted coup d'état after his electoral defeat in 2022.

On January 8, 2023, Bolsonaro's supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace in Brasilia shortly after current head of state Lula da Silva took office. Bolsonaro insists he committed no wrongdoing in connection with those events.

Since mid-July this year, the former Brazilian head of state has been under strict restrictions that include a nighttime curfew, a ban on contact with diplomats and the wearing of an electronic bracelet.
