Russia Has Hit A Pipeline Supplying Ukraine With Gas From The U.S. And Azerbaijan

The Russian military carried out an attack on a compressor station in the Odessa region.

On the night of 6 August, the Russian military attacked the compressor station of the Ukrainian GTS Operator in Odessa Region, the Energy Ministry has said. The facility is used to supply gas to the country. The station is located in the village of Novoselske on the border with Romania and provides a diversified route that connects Greek LNG terminals to Ukrainian gas storage facilities via the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline. Ukraine used it to receive liquefied natural gas from the United States and blue fuel from Azerbaijan, which was supplied in test mode.

The Energy Ministry specified that the station was attacked by "dozens of drones." The ministry emphasized that the strike was carried out "purposefully, on purely civilian infrastructure," including to harm Ukraine's trade relations with Azerbaijan, the United States and European partners. President Vladimir Zelensky said the damage to the plant had left "hundreds of families without gas". "This was a deliberate blow to our preparations for the heating season, absolutely cynical, like every Russian blow to the energy sector," he said.

Energy Minister Svetlana Grinchuk called the massive attack on the key compressor station of the Trans-Balkan route "a clear and understandable signal for the whole of Europe," which plans to completely abandon Russian natural gas by 2027. She said the incident "shows that Moscow will use all available means and levers to destroy the energy independence" of the EU. Hrynchuk added that unless the parters take action, "not a single infrastructure facility in Europe will be safe." "Impunity only expands terror. That is why Russia must answer for what it has done," she emphasized.

Azerbaijan began supplying gas to Ukraine via the Trans-Balkan pipeline (running through Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania) in July. "Naftogaz" concluded a corresponding agreement with the Azerbaijani state company SOCAR. The Ukrainian Energy Ministry said at the time that the volume of supplies was small but of "strategic importance".
