The presidents of the United States and Ukraine Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky have started a telephone conversation. This was reported by sources of the Reuters agency and the Ukrainian publication Suspilne.

Information about the conversation came a short time after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. administration had contacted Trump's special envoy Steve Whitkoff following his three-hour talks in Moscow with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky later said European leaders also took part in the conversation and thanked them for their support.

"Ukraine will definitely defend its independence. We all need a long and reliable peace. Russia must end the war it started. Thank you to everyone who supports Ukraine," the head of state said in a statement.
