Indian PM To Visit China For First Time In 7 Years
Narendra Modi

Amid tensions with the U.S.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China in late August for the first time in more than seven years. The visit will take place against the backdrop of rising tensions with the United States.

The Reuters agency writes about it, citing a source in the Indian government.

According to the agency's interlocutor, Modi will travel to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which begins on August 31.

It is noted that Modi's trip comes at a time when India's relations with the United States are in their most serious crisis in recent years after US President Donald Trump imposed the highest duties among Asian countries on goods imported from India and threatened New Delhi with further sanctions over its purchase of Russian oil.

The Indian prime minister's visit to the Chinese city of Tianjin to attend the SCO summit will be his first trip to China since 2018.

Reuters notes that Sino-Indian relations subsequently deteriorated sharply after a military clash on the shared Himalayan border in 2020.

Modi and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, however, held talks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia in October, leading to improved relations between the two countries. Now the Asian neighboring countries are slowly easing tensions that have hampered business and travel between India and China.
