Major General Major General Sami Nurmi, Chief of the Strategic Division of the Defense Forces, believes that the US is proving its commitment to cooperation with Finland and the Baltic States.
"Defense cooperation between Finland and the US is based on long-term partnership and cooperation within NATO. The U.S. presence is not a one-off action, but part of our ongoing and deepening partnership and alliance. It is a testament to the commitment to common defense as well as to the security of Finland and the Baltic Sea region," the Finnish Defense Forces said.
The Finnish-U.S. Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) allows U.S. troops to stay and conduct exercises in Finland. The agreement entered into force last year and is now being put into practice. Bilateral activities are carried out in accordance with the agreement and on the basis of mutual understanding.
U.S. military personnel may occasionally move outside of garrisons and training grounds.
"U.S. military personnel and equipment can be found in various parts of Finland. They are welcome here. We may not be great at small talk, but a nod or a smile is fine if you meet the military on the street," Major General Nurmi was quoted as saying by the Army Press Office.
The Finnish Parliament unanimously approved the Finland-U.S. Military Cooperation Agreement (DCA) on July 1, 2024, which grants the U.S. Army the right to use 15 local military facilities.
Sweden's parliament approved a bilateral defense agreement with the United States on June 19, 2024 - this despite concerns from environmentalists and left-wing opposition over the deployment of nuclear weapons on Swedish territory.
