U.S. presidential special envoy Steve Whitkoff plans to hold a videoconference with senior officials from Ukraine, Finland, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom on Thursday, August 7, to recount his meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and discuss next steps, including a possible meeting between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, Axios citing sources.
Whitkoff visited Russia for the fifth time on August 6, where he met with Vladimir Putin. Their meeting lasted about three hours. According to presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Putin and Whitkoff discussed the war in Ukraine and "the prospects for possible development of strategic cooperation between the United States and Russia." Ushakov also said that on the Russian side "some signals were transmitted to [the U.S.] on the Ukrainian issue," and Putin, through Whitkoff, received "relevant signals from Trump."
On Wednesday evening, Trump published a post on the social media network Truth Social in which he called Whitkoff's meeting with Putin "very productive." The US president also held a phone conversation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Following it, Zelensky wrote that European leaders also participated, without specifying who exactly.
"We discussed everything that was voiced in Moscow," he wrote.
