WSJ: Putin Ready For Full Ceasefire In Exchange For Ukraine's Withdrawal From Donetsk Region

The Kremlin told Whitkoff.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has told US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff that he will agree to a full ceasefire if Ukraine withdraws troops from the entire eastern Donetsk region.

The Wall Street Journal reports this.

The publication's sources say Putin presented US President Trump's administration with a radical proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine. In particular, demanding that Kiev make significant territorial concessions and promote global recognition of its rights in exchange for a cessation of hostilities.

The publication writes that the issue is the Donetsk region. In such a case, Russia would control Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as the Crimean peninsula, which it seized in 2014 and wants to be recognized as sovereign Russian territory.

Whitkoff himself, during a conversation with European officials, said the Russian proposal included two stages.

In the first stage, Ukraine would have to withdraw from Donetsk region and the front lines would be frozen. This would be followed by a second stage in which Putin and Trump would agree on a final peace plan, which would later be negotiated with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

A Ukrainian official who participated in the conversation with Trump on Wednesday said Kiev did not deny any proposal in principle, but a cease-fire would be a prerequisite for any further steps

As part of that proposal, the Russian president, sources said, promised that his government would pass a law pledging not to attack Ukraine or Europe.
