New sanctions await Lukashenko's regime.
European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos on August 9 issued a joint statement on the fifth anniversary of the rigged presidential election in Belarus.
The statement stressed that the ongoing repression in Belarus "is unacceptable and must stop." The EU officials also called on Minsk to "immediately release all political prisoners, end repression and engage in an inclusive national dialog."
"The crackdown on ongoing civil society must stop. Belarus must also stop supporting Russia's illegal war against Ukraine," the statement said.
Kaya Kallas and Marta Kos said they were "in full solidarity with the people of Belarus" and would continue to "impose sanctions on those who suppress democracy and violate human rights."
"The EU will support the people of Belarus on their path to democracy for as long as necessary," they emphasized.
