We are talking about the Zangezur corridor.

Iran will block the construction of the US-backed transportation corridor in the South Caucasus. This will be done even without Russia's help.

A senior adviser to Iran's supreme leader Ali Akbar Velayati said this, RBC-Ukraine reported, citing Tashim and Iran International.

It should be noted that yesterday Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev brokered a peace deal with US President Donald Trump.

The document, among other things, gives Washington exclusive rights to develop a transit route through Armenia (meaning the Zangezur corridor). It will connect mainland Azerbaijan with the autonomous republic of Nakhichevan, bypassing Iran and Russia.

And the corridor will be managed by an American company for 99 years with the right to further extensions.

Ali Akbar Velayati said it would jeopardize "regional security and change the geopolitical map of the region," which is why Iran will block construction.

- Mr. Trump believes the Caucasus is real estate he can lease for 99 years. This passage will not be a gateway for Trump's mercenaries - it will be their graveyard," said a senior adviser to Iran's supreme leader.

He added that Iran has "always opposed" the Zangezour corridor, saying it would change borders, fragment Armenia and limit Iran's access to the region.

He also said that when Turkey and Azerbaijan promoted the plan earlier, Iran conducted several military exercises on its northwestern border to demonstrate its readiness to block it.

"With or without Russia, we will act in the interest of securing the South Caucasus," Velayati said, adding that he believes Moscow also opposes the corridor for strategic reasons.
