Lithuanian President And The Head Of The European Commission Meet At The Border With Belarus

On the border with Belarus, European Commission (EC) Chairwoman Ursula von der Leyen said that Europe stands with Lithuania and other EU countries neighboring Russia and Belarus. She said that when hostile countries test Lithuania's border security, the security of all of Europe is also tested, LRT reported.

"Today Europe stands with Lithuania as a border state: you face Russia in Kaliningrad, you face Belarus on the border, you experience geopolitical and economic challenges, you face constant military and hybrid threats," von der Leyen said Let me assure you: when Lithuania is tested, the whole of Europe is tested. We are together with you in every possible way," she emphasized.

The EC chief reiterated the announcement made in Poland on Sunday that additional funding will be provided for member states bordering Russia and Belarus in the new long-term budget of the European Union (EU).

"In the long-term perspective of the European budget, we have proposed to triple spending on migration and border protection - there is a strong emphasis on this. We want the countries directly bordering Russia and Belarus to receive additional funds," said U. von der Leyen, emphasizing that the protection of European borders is the responsibility of all EU countries.

Although the future EU budget and the allocation of funds for the border states remain under negotiation, the EC President noted that the Union has already significantly helped Lithuania in border protection. von der Leyen recalled that the EU participated in the financing of border surveillance systems, allocated funds for the implementation of the visa and migration policy. We have two tools (...) - the SAFE tool and, for Member States at the national level, exemptions from the national budget," von der Leyen said.
