There Was A Powerful Earthquake In Afghanistan

Hundreds dead, thousands wounded.

More than 600 people were killed and more than 1,500 injured in a magnitude 6.0 earthquake on the evening of August 31 in eastern Afghanistan. The tremors were accompanied by two aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.2 and 4.7, Radio Liberty reported.

The greatest destruction was recorded in Kunar province and neighboring districts of Nurgal, Sokkai, Watapur, Manogi and Chapa Dara.

According to authorities, the number of victims and injured may increase. Rescuers continue to remove debris and try to reach remote communities.

The U.S. Geological Survey says buildings in the affected region are extremely vulnerable to seismic shocks, increasing the risk of loss of life.
