Because of the losses.
Sunflower oil production in Russia has sharply decreased: at the end of August the output fell by 11% year-on-year to 6.94 million tons. At the same time, the overall production of vegetable oils in the country fell by 7% year-on-year to 9.47 million tons. This follows from the OleoScope data cited by "Kommersant". Such figures are due to the shutdown of some plants, whose losses have increased to 20%, says the managing director of the Center of competence in agro-industrial complex "Reksoft Consulting" Dmitri Krasnov. According to OleoScope data, the total volume of processing in Russia for the year decreased by 5.7% to 26.3 million tons.
According to the executive director of the Oil and Fat Union Mikhail Maltsev, the economy of processing went into the minus because of the increase in the cost of seed, stagnation of world prices, strengthening of the ruble and the current duties. The margin of unrefined sunflower oil decreased from 11.4% at the end of 2023 - to 0.6% in the first quarter of 2025, calculated partner for business development Neo Albina Koryagina. In the refined segment the figure is higher - 5.9%, but in general, the deteriorating economy makes the production of sunflower oil of little interest to business, the expert noted.
So, in March, one of the largest agro-industrial companies in Russia - "Efko" announced the suspension of two enterprises in the Krasnodar region with a total capacity of 3.2 thousand tons per day. Natural Products co-founder Alexei Podobedov said in the spring that the oil plants producing butter continued to operate "in minus" for more than six months. "We are no longer counting on this season, the task is to endure and wait for the next one," the businessman explained.
