Pressure is the only thing Putin really takes seriously.
The European Union is working on the next, nineteenth package of sanctions against Russia, and the previously imposed sanctions have proved their effectiveness. This was stated on the margins of the Strategic Forum in Bled, Slovenia, on September 1 by the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, reports Radio Liberty.
"Pressure is the only thing Putin really takes seriously. The reason he wanted to hold the meeting in Alaska was to delay the threat of sanctions coming from the United States. So he doesn't really want sanctions," Callas noted.
Evaluating US President Donald Trump's diplomatic efforts, the European diplomatic chief welcomed them, praising separately the secondary sanctions against Russia's trading partners. At the same time, she noted that "if we were all tougher on Putin, this war would be over by now."
"We have heard that President Trump is not a very patient man. However, he seems to be very patient with Putin," Callas said. Callas considers Vladimir Putin's demands for Russia to give up Ukraine's territories that have not been militarily seized a trap:
"Everyone starts talking about what Ukraine should give up, and they say that, of course, Zelensky should decide what territories to give up. You see, this really doesn't take into account the essence of the fact that Russia hasn't made any concessions...while everyone is talking about what Ukraine should give up."
Callas emphasized that she sees no signs that Russia is ready for real peace. On the contrary - in her opinion, Moscow is preparing to continue the war against Ukraine.
"Winter is coming, we see that they are preparing attacks on the energy infrastructure to inflict as much pain as possible, and so we also need to prepare... It takes at least two to want peace, and enough one to want war. And as long as Russia still wants war, there will be no peace," summarized Kaja Kallas.
