Denmark Proposes To Check All Gas For Signs Of Supply From Russia

Importers are planned to be required to prove that the gas was not produced in Russia.

As the EU has decided to ban Russian gas imports by the end of 2027, countries in the union are looking for ways to provide guarantees that gas imported into Europe was not produced in Russia, Bloomberg reported.

To that end, Denmark has proposed requiring importers to provide national authorities with relevant evidence, according to a document seen by the agency.

The document focuses on the large Turkish Stream pipeline, which runs between Russia and southeastern Europe.

"It is assumed that natural gas entering the European Union through the borders or interconnection points between the European Union and Russia or Belarus, as well as through the Strandzha-2/Malkoklar interconnection point (Turkish Stream), is exported, directly or indirectly, from Russia, unless unequivocal evidence to the contrary is provided," the Danish compromise decision reads.

Tracking exactly where the gas was extracted is extremely difficult, especially when it is often mixed with other supplies on its way to the end consumer, the agency notes.

Denmark aims to reach an agreement to ban Russian gas supplies between member states by October. It will then need to negotiate with the European Parliament to reach a final agreement before the end of the year so the rules can take effect, Bloomberg writes.

The European Commission on June 17 proposed a ban on Russian gas imports until the end of 2027. EU diplomatic chief Kaja Kallas promised to shut off the tap of gas from Russia "forever."

According to the proposed ban, Russian gas supplies under existing contracts of less than one year would be cut off no later than June 17, 2026, except for landlocked countries such as Hungary and Slovakia, Bloomberg explained. The ban on supplies under existing long-term agreements will come into effect by the end of 2027.
