U.S. Congress May Reinstate Amendment That Would Ban Trade With Russian Federation

The bill was introduced after the attack on Poland.

A bill has been introduced in the US Congress to restore the Jackson-Vanik amendment to enforce an end to trade with Russia.

The announced Republican US Congressman Joe Wilson.

"In the wake of the attack on Poland, I gratefully introduce this bill to restore the Jackson-Vanik amendment against Russia, halting all trade with this terrorist dictatorship," the congressman wrote.

At the same time, he spoke out about previous authorities and called the "reset" of relations with Russia a mistake. He noted that it prompted Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin to occupy Crimea.

"Presidents Obama and John Kerry improperly repealed this law during the misguided 'reset' of relations with Russia that prompted war criminal Putin to occupy Crimea," Wilson wrote."

He also believes U.S. President Donald Trump will rectify the situation.

"Trump will fix it," the congressman summarized.

What is the Jackson-Vanik Amendment

We recall that the Jackson-Vanik Amendment is a U.S. law that was passed in 1974.

It prohibited normal trade with countries with "bad economies" (non-market economies) if those countries did not let people out of the country (e.g. Jews from the USSR). So, in effect, it was a way to add on the Soviet Union.

After the collapse of the USSR, the law formally continued to apply to Russia. However, US presidents "froze" it every year in order to trade.

Already in 2012 it was finally repealed and replaced by the Magnitsky Act (sanctions against specific Russian officials).
