The Venezuelan dictator called the threat from the U.S. the most serious in 100 years.
Venezuela's dictator Nicolas Maduro announced the launch of a new defense plan for the country called "Independence 200: active resistance and relentless offensive," Venezuelan state television Venezolana de Television.
Maduro said the program involves the National Bolivarian Armed Forces (FANB) and popular militias. He said these measures are necessary to protect Venezuela's right to peace, independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the people.
"We must protect our coast from imperialists, invaders and aggressive groups all along its length," Maduro said.
The presidential announcement came amid strained relations with the United States. Earlier, on September 2, U.S. leader Donald Trump announced the elimination of eleven members of a Venezuelan drug cartel during a U.S. Navy operation in international waters. Trump accused Caracas of not doing enough to combat the drug trade, and called the gang controlled by Maduro.
In response, the Venezuelan dictator called what is happening the most serious threat of U.S. invasion in the last hundred years. According to him, World War III has begun and the U.S. has a plan for it.
He emphasized that the U.S. wants to change the regime in Venezuela militarily. In March 2020, the U.S. Justice Department found Maduro and several other then current or former members of the Venezuelan government guilty of narco-terrorism and using banned substances "as weapons" against the United States. Washington is offering a $50 million reward for information that could lead to the arrest of the Venezuelan dictator.
