This was stated by the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry.
Following Lukashenko's release of 52 political prisoners and the US lifting of sanctions on Belavia, Foreign Minister Kiastutis Budrys insists that Washington is not demanding that Lithuania lift restrictive measures against official Minsk, writes Delfi.
- I can guarantee you that this issue is not on the table. The sanctions that have been imposed are being extended. <...> Until the reasons for which they (sanctions) were imposed are removed, there will be no such debate," Budrys said on Thursday, September 11.
According to him, Washington's desire to participate in negotiations with Minsk and to achieve essentially the same result - the release of political prisoners and some easing of the regime - is noticeable. In turn, the Minister admitted that he is skeptical about such exchanges, but stressed that this does not oblige Lithuania to change its rules.
- We are not bound. <...> These are U.S. decisions, sovereign U.S. decisions about who applies what sanctions and how. The sanctions imposed in our space are European sanctions, and in addition, we have imposed national restrictive measures because of Belarus' assistance to Russia in its aggression against Ukraine. We still have the possibility of transferring the European Union (EU) sanctions into national sanctions if they stop working," Budrys emphasized.
The foreign minister noted that Lithuania "applies a policy that, in our assessment, in my assessment, produces results."
- This is a sanctions policy, a policy of isolating the regime, a policy of supporting democratic forces," he said.
