A major success for Polish diplomacy at the UN.
Nearly 50 UN member states have condemned Russia's incursion into Polish airspace on the night of September 10. The corresponding statement was read out by Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki before an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
This is reported in a broadcast on the Youtube channel of the UN.
The deputy head of the Polish Foreign Ministry said that the Russian Federation, attacking the territory of Ukraine on the night of September 10, carried out 19 incursions of objects like drones into Polish airspace.
They posed a real threat to the civilian population, infrastructure and aviation safety, so they were preventively neutralized.
"For the first time since the beginning of Russia's half-scale invasion of Ukraine, Poland's territorial integrity and simultaneously NATO and EU airspace was violated on such an unprecedented and massive scale," he said.
Bosacki also recalled that this event came after previous instances of Russia's violation of Polish airspace, which is why Poland decided for the first time to request an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.
Poland and the signatory countries called on Russia to immediately stop its war of aggression against Ukraine, refrain from further provocations and comply with the obligations enshrined in the UN Charter.
Besides Poland, the statement was signed by most European countries, as well as Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and the United States.
"Everyone emphasized that what happened was an escalation of the Ukrainian conflict in which no one is interested," Marcin Bosacki said during a conference following the UN Security Council meeting, TVN24.
He also pointed to the great success of Polish diplomacy at the UN.
"We are very satisfied with the results of this emergency Security Council meeting (....), because the Russians heard from almost everyone that, to put it very mildly, by expanding the conflict, they are confronting the whole world," Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki told a news conference.
"Everyone, not only the Europeans, but also countries from other continents, emphasized that what happened was an escalation of the Ukrainian conflict in which no one is interested," he said. "This is something that will certainly be heard in Moscow," he added.
Bosacki also noted that "a total of more than 50 countries participated (...) in the statement to the media before the Security Council meeting, and for the first time during Donald Trump's term in office, the United States administration also joined this statement." "This is our great success, this is a great success of Polish diplomacy," he assessed.
"The Russians lied, but I think that both I and other colleagues from European countries managed to refute these lies quite accurately and unambiguously," said Poland's deputy foreign minister.
Bosacki pointed out that two events occurred on the night of September 9-10. First, "the Russians dared to test drone attacks on a European Union and NATO country." "The second very important moment is that we shot down Russian aircraft, and we shot them down not only with our own forces, but also together with allies," he added.
"Everyone appreciates and understands this, because Russia received a clear signal: you can try to provoke us, but we are ready for it," he assessed.
Bosatsky also said that the main conclusion from this Security Council meeting is that "Russia already knows that if it continues to escalate in other countries what it is doing in Ukraine, it will face condemnation from the whole world."
"I don't think this will change the strategic goals of Russia, which wants to conquer its neighbors and rebuild an empire," Bosatsky said. At the same time, he pointed out that Russia should realize that "there are nations that don't like it."
"It seems to me that the further away from the Alaska summit, the more Putin escalates the situation in Ukraine, and now not only in Ukraine, but also against Poland, the more, to put it mildly, the more realistic the position of the United States becomes regarding when and by what means it is possible to achieve from Putin a ceasefire and then peace," the Polish deputy foreign minister assessed.
Bosacki also recalled that Europe is preparing the 19th package of sanctions against Russia and said that "we would always like our brothers from the Atlantic, that is, the Americans, to join these packages."
