The nuclear arsenal will be the central pillar.
North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has announced that North Korea will present a new policy aimed at simultaneous development of nuclear forces and conventional armed forces.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing North Korea's state-run KCNA news agency.
During a meeting of the leadership of the Workers' Party of Korea, Kim Jong Un said the country would soon unveil a new military policy.
Kim said the new course should be "a key factor in strengthening the country's defense capability and ensuring national security."
He stressed that the nuclear arsenal will remain the central pillar of the deterrence strategy, but at the same time the combat capability of land, sea and air forces must be built up to meet "any challenge from enemies."
Kim Jong-un also instructed the military leadership to prepare a detailed plan to modernize the army, including developing new weapons, strengthening personnel training and improving the command system.
Analysts note that such a statement may indicate Pyongyang's intention to strengthen not only its nuclear shield, but also its traditional armed forces.
The international community has traditionally been critical of any moves by the DPRK related to the expansion of its nuclear program. The US, South Korea and Japan are expected to react to Kim's speech in the near future.
