Exitpol: CDU Wins Election In North Rhine-Westphalia

The ruling coalition, experts believe, has passed its first serious test.

The federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia held its first communal elections on Sunday, September 14, after a new government formed from the conservative CDU/CSU and Social Democrats (SPD) bloc came to power, writes "Deutsche Welle"

According to preliminary data from the Infratest dimap institute, which WDR cites on its website, representatives of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received the largest number of votes (34%). In second place - the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) with 22.5% of votes. The right-wing populist Alternative for Germany gets 16.5%.

According to Infratest dimap, voter turnout has reached 58.5% - a 6.6% increase from 2020. If these figures are confirmed, turnout in the last communal election in North Rhine-Westphalia will be the highest since 1994, WDR notes.

The AdG showed the biggest increase in votes compared to the last communal election in 2020 (+11.4 points). The Christian Democrats generally maintained their position, losing only 0.3 points. The same applies to the SPD (-1.8%).

The result of the Union-90/Greens party deteriorated significantly. According to preliminary data, they are gaining 11.5% of the vote in this election, which is 8.5% less than in 2020. The liberal FDP gained 3.5%, 2.1% less than last time. The Left Party increased its result by 1.7% to 5.5% of the vote.

The communal elections elect city and municipal councils, county councils, and city and county heads. The elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous federal state with a population of about 18 million, have been called by experts the first serious test for the federal government, which came to power in May 2025.
