The country has crossed a "red line."
India has joined the Zapad-2025 Russian-Belarusian military exercises. The country has sent its military.
It was reported by The Times.
India's Defense Ministry said it had sent 65 military personnel to the exercise, including members of the Kumaon Regiment, one of the army's most respected units.
They are stationed at the Judino training range, about 40 miles west of Nizhny Novgorod (far from NATO borders).
"(We want - ed.) to further strengthen defense cooperation and enhance the camaraderie between India and Russia, thereby strengthening the spirit of cooperation and mutual trust," the statement said.
The Defense Ministry added that the military will participate in "joint training, tactical exercises and practicing special weapons skills" along with their Russian counterparts.
The country had previously participated in the previous Zapad exercise before the full-scale war in Ukraine and has since attended several other Russian military exercises.
But analysts say the country's decision to join the ongoing military exercises at a time of tension between Russia and NATO was a wake-up call.
The current Russian-Belarusian exercises involve about 30,000 military personnel from both countries. These exercises include ballistic missile launches and simulated air strikes.
All of this is taking place over a wide area - from bases east of Moscow and in the Arctic to the Baltic Sea and the western border of Belarus.
Another important point about India. The Times notes that the country has sent its troops to Russian-led exercises to practice warfare with neighboring NATO countries as India's relations with the United States continue to deteriorate.
