Poland's president made demands for reparations for his country during his first visit to Berlin.
Poland's new president, Karol Nawrocki, during his first official visit to Berlin, was rebuffed in his demands for German reparations for damage to his country during World War II. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, as he had done previously, firmly rejected the demands, emphasizing that the matter "from Germany's point of view has been finally resolved," DW quoted by dpa news agency on Tuesday, September 16.
After his conversation with his German counterpart, the Polish president also made this demand in a subsequent one-on-one dialogue with Chancellor Friedrich Merz. According to dpa from government circles, the chancellor confirmed Germany's "final" position in that conversation.

There were no press conferences after the talks in Berlin, which is unusual for an important German partner like Poland, the agency emphasized. This prompted critical questions from German journalists, and Polish media quoted Nawrocki on his post on social network X.
The Polish president wrote on social network X that he "clearly emphasized both the issues that unite us and Poland's expectations from the German side." According to him, the meeting with Steinmeier was about security problems in the region, the future of the EU and "reparations for the damage done to Poland during World War II."
Shortly before his arrival in Berlin, the Polish president told the Bild newspaper, "The question of reparations is certainly not legally closed." In the same interview, he expressed his "firm conviction that we will reach an agreement with the German chancellor and president." As before, Poland insists on Germany paying 1.3 trillion euros. "This is the only figure that has its starting point in very deep and well-founded scientific research," Nawrocki reiterated the position of previous Polish authorities.
