The motorcade, the parade, the fireworks.

US President Donald Trump officially began his unprecedented second state visit to the UK on Wednesday, September 17. It comes amid diplomatic talks and discussions on difficult issues.

According to Reuters.

King Charles and the royal family gave the US president a grand reception at Windsor Castle. A parade motorcade, artillery salute, military air parade and banquet were prepared for Trump.

British authorities say it is the largest ceremonial reception for a state visit in recent history.

Personal sympathies and diplomatic goals

Trump has long shown an affinity for the British monarchy and became the first elected politician to be invited by the monarch twice. "I Love King Charles," he wrote earlier in Truth Social.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expects to use the visit to strengthen the "special relationship" between the two countries. The talks will focus on the economy, investment, tariffs and the issue of support for Ukraine.

Wednesday's program will be entirely ceremonial. Donald and Melania Trump will be met by Prince William and his wife Kate. Later, King Charles and Queen Camilla will join the presidential couple in a motorcade through the castle grounds, where 1,300 military personnel will be deployed.

Trump will visit St. George's Chapel, where he will lay a wreath on the grave of Queen Elizabeth, who hosted him in 2019. The day will end with a banquet and speeches by Charles and Trump.

Security issues and protests

Security is being provided by thousands of law enforcement officers. A massive police operation is in place in Windsor, and 1,600 officers are deployed in London to control the Stop the Trump Coalition protests.

For Charles himself, the visit could prove controversial. His views on environmentalism, religion and international relations are far from Trump's. But the visit provides the monarch with unprecedented global attention after his coronation.

Further talks and difficult topics

The talks will continue Thursday at the prime minister's country residence, Chequers. Starmer hopes the focus on the monarchy will take the focus away from sensitive topics, including free speech and the resignation of Britain's ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson.

The scandal surrounding Mandelson's ties to convicted financier Jeffrey Epstein could create uncomfortable questions for both the British prime minister and Trump, whose relationship with the businessman has also been criticized.

In addition, police have arrested a man on suspicion of launching a drone over Windsor on the eve of President Trump's visit.
