Politico: King Charles Could Influence Trump's Stance On Ukraine
King Charles

Kiev has a unique ally.

Ukraine's allies are trying every way they can to keep Donald Trump on their side. This week, the King of England himself was tapped for diplomatic tools.

It was reported by Politico.

Ukraine's allies are seeking new leverage over Trump

With first lady Melania, Trump will become the first U.S. president to be formally welcomed at Windsor Castle. It will be another exception in a string of unusual steps in Trump's second state visit.

London is preparing a lavish reception with a banquet, an honorary escort and a military air parade. There is also a political purpose behind the ceremony - to recall Britain and the United States' long history of military cooperation.

King as mediator

British authorities are counting on the royal allure to help Prime Minister Keir Starmer persuade Trump to increase pressure on Vladimir Putin. Although peace talks in Ukraine are not officially on the program, sources expect them to be raised behind closed doors.

A senior military official said the king is very close to the details of the ceasefire talks and personally to Vladimir Zelensky. This gives London a unique advantage - a monarch who quietly but consistently supports Kiev.

Support for Zelensky

In contrast to his cold attitude toward the Ukrainian president, Trump has shown deep respect for the British monarchy. Going to London, he called Charles an "elegant gentleman" and the visit a "great honor."

After the scandalous meeting in the Oval Office, it was Charles who Zelensky found support. The king unexpectedly invited him to tea at Sandringham and then to lunch at Windsor Castle before the June NATO summit.

Oricia Lutsevich of Chatham House said Charles's gestures signaled "solidarity and a reminder of who is the victim and who is the aggressor." According to the former British diplomat, the monarch knows how to find forms of expressing his position, even without speaking publicly.

Secret Diplomacy

Trump will spend the night in Windsor during his visit, where he will be treated to a carriage procession, a dinner in the state hall and a state banquet. According to former diplomats, it is on the sidelines that the king may try to persuade the president to support Ukraine.

Recently, Charles called for a "just and lasting peace" in a message for Ukraine's Independence Day. Experts do not rule out that he will mention Ukraine again in his speech at the banquet. The symbolism of the visit emphasizes the role of Britain and the United States as allies in the wars.

Tough choice for Trump

The question remains, however, whether the king can really influence the American leader. Advisers point out that similar techniques have previously helped convince Trump of the importance of NATO. This time, he is joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Whitkoff, who will also be tried to induce support for Kiev.

Charles' biographer Robert Hardman emphasized that "in soft power terms, the world is more interested in the monarchy than Downing Street." That said, Trump's position on Russia remains contradictory.

The president has made it clear that additional US measures against Moscow are possible only after NATO allies stop buying Russian oil and impose tariffs against China. According to experts, this position leaves little room for maneuver.

Trump may listen to the king's arguments, but experts are not yet ready to expect a sharp turn in his policy.
