Chrystia Freeland To Represent Canada In Kyiv

Chrystia Freeland To Represent Canada In Kyiv
Chrystia Freeland

An ethnic Ukrainian woman will become a special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Christia Freeland, one of the most influential Canadian politicians of the last decade, has announced her resignation from the cabinet of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The politician with Ukrainian roots will take up a new mission - to become Canada's special representative for Ukraine's reconstruction, writes Politico (translated by Charter97.org).

"It is with great gratitude and a little sadness that I have decided to resign," Freeland wrote in a statement, adding that she does not intend to run in the next election but will retain her mandate as a member of parliament.

Prime Minister Carney emphasized that Freeland had shown "principled leadership and intelligence" and had served the country in the most difficult of times. Sources said negotiations on her new role had been ongoing for more than a month.

Freeland previously served as transportation secretary and oversaw domestic trade. Her departure followed shortly after her visit to Kiev.

The Ukrainian-born politician is fluent in the language and has long been considered one of Kiev's most consistent allies. Her pro-Ukrainian stance has been evident since her student days, when she was spied on by the KGB.

Freeland has remained a major voice for Ukraine throughout her career - first in Justin Trudeau's government and then in Carney's cabinet. In interviews, she has repeatedly said she is confident in Ukraine's future as a "democratic and free country."

Freeland began her career as a journalist before moving into politics in 2013. She has held key positions, from international trade minister to foreign minister, and then deputy prime minister and head of the Finance Ministry.

Freeland's experience and connections will now be focused on the main task of promoting international support for Ukraine and its post-war reconstruction.
