Spain Proposes Creative Use Of Frozen Russian Assets

The Minister of Economy announced the details.

The Spanish government supports the European Commission on the use of Russian frozen assets for Bloomberg told Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo.

Cuerpo emphasized that Spain is in favor of increasing as much as possible the financial resources of Ukraine, which is confronting Russian aggression. In his opinion, financial aid to Kiev could be provided by Russian assets frozen in Western banks.

"We support the European Commission's proposal on Russian frozen assets. We need to find creative ways to use them," Cuerpo said.

The Spanish economy minister also said Spain is gradually reducing its imports of Russian natural gas and will completely abandon them after some time. Madrid is increasing its purchases of natural gas from the United States.

It should be noted that European countries still buy large quantities of Russian gas, although they support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

In 2024, Russian natural gas took almost 19% of the market in the European Union.

Russian Frozen Assets

After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian occupation forces began in February 2022, Western countries imposed economic sanctions against Russia, including freezing Russian assets in their banks.

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen recently said the EU is developing a plan to use frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a "reparation loan." At the same time, the frozen Russian assets will not be taken away, as some European countries oppose this.
