Support for the bill is bipartisan.
U.S. senators have introduced a bill to increase pressure on Moscow by expanding sanctions against the so-called "shadow fleet" of oil tankers used by Russia to circumvent sanctions, writes Financial Times (translated by Charter97.org).
The new package of restrictions, which will be introduced on September 20, involves blocking ships involved in the export of Russian oil and liquefied gas, as well as expanding sanctions against Russia's defense sector. The document was initiated by Senators Jim Risch (Republican) and Jean Shaheen (Democrat).
"Putin is using every trick possible to circumvent the sanctions. The United States is committed to cracking down on these courts, which are used to supplement the military budget," Risch said.
The support for the bill is bipartisan. The authors were joined by, among others, allies of US President Donald Trump - Lindsey Graham and Tom Cotton.
At the same time, Trump's talks with Putin on ending the war in Ukraine have stalled. Despite threats to impose tough measures, Trump has yet to take concrete steps against Moscow.
At the same time, the European Union is considering its own sanctions against Russia's oil and gas industry and companies from China and India that buy its energy resources.
