Estonia Summons UN Security Council Over Russian Fighter Jets Violating Airspace

This is the first time in the 34 years of the country's membership in the UN that this has happened.

The UN Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Monday, September 22, over Russia's violation of Estonia's airspace on Friday.

This was reported by ERR citing the Estonian Foreign Ministry, European Truth reported.

This is the first time in Estonia's 34 years of UN membership that the country has requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council.

"By brazenly violating our airspace, Russia is undermining principles that are important for the security of all UN members, and therefore it is important that a permanent member of the UN Security Council discuss such violations in the same body," Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized.

He said the violation of Estonian airspace is part of a broader Russian action aimed at testing the resolve of Europe and NATO.

"The violation of Estonian airspace was preceded just days before by the intrusion of 19 Russian drones into Polish airspace and the presence of one Russian attack drone in Romanian airspace for one hour. All of these incidents are part of a broader pattern by which Russia is escalating regional and global tensions, and such Russian actions require an international response," Tsahkna said.

He added that Russia's behavior "is inconsistent with the obligations undertaken by a permanent member of the Security Council and would be unacceptable to any other UN member state."
