Against the backdrop of Erdogan's visit to Washington.
The Turkish government announced the cancellation of additional import duties on 33 categories of goods from the United States, which had been in effect since 2018. The decision was published in the official Resmi Gazete.
The cancellation affected goods such as alcoholic beverages, cars, tobacco products and cosmetics. The decision to lift trade duties comes against the backdrop of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to the US. The Turkish leader will attend the UN General Assembly meetings in New York and hold talks with US President Donald Trump in Washington on September 25.
Earlier, Erdogan revealed the topic of his planned conversation with US President Donald Trump. He wants to discuss with the United States leader "vital" steps to resolve the conflict in the Middle East. He told a briefing. "Every step taken in the Middle East is vital for us. Of course, we need to discuss it with Mr. Trump," Erdogan stressed.
The initial additional duties were imposed by Ankara in 2018 in response to the US raising tariffs on imports of Turkish products during the first term of Trump's presidency. They affected imports of cars, alcoholic beverages and leaf tobacco. In addition, the new measures affected imports of cosmetics and skin care products, paper, cardboard, rice, nuts, cellulose wool, coal and wood waste from the United States.
In 2018, Washington reviewed Turkey's participation in the program for preferential imports of goods from developing countries to the United States. The reason was the tariffs imposed by Turkey on goods from the US. They affected imports in the amount of $1.78 billion. It is known that in 2017 the U.S. imported goods from Turkey for $1.66 billion under the program.
