NATO Deploys Turkish MEROPS Surveillance System In Poland And Romania

To defend against Russian drone incursions.

NATO will deploy Turkey's MEROPS (Multispectral Extended Range Optical Sight) aerial surveillance system in Poland and Romania amid growing concerns about Russian drone incursions into Alliance airspace, according to Euractiv.

The MEROPS system developed by Turkish defense contractor Aselsan can be mounted on helicopters and drones and can detect enemy systems through clouds and dust. It was first unveiled to the public in 2022.

Training on the system will begin next week with support from Ukraine.

The deployment of the system is said to enhance early warning capabilities and speed up the response to the threat posed by drones.

The decision also illustrates a broad shift toward optical surveillance systems - in addition to radar and traditional fighter aircraft - as part of NATO's strategy for air control in Eastern Europe.
