Michael Waltz: U.S. Will Defend "every Inch" Of NATO Countries
Michael Waltz

A strong statement from the U.S. post president at the U.N.

The United States and its allies will defend "every inch" of the territory of NATO member states. U.S. Representative to the United Nations Michael Waltz said this on September 22 at a UN Security Council meeting on several cases of alleged Russian violations of NATO countries' airspace, Radio Liberty reported.

On the night of September 10, about 20 Russian drones crossed the Polish border, according to Polish authorities. Several of the devices were shot down by NATO aviation. A drone was also reported to have flown in Romanian airspace. On September 19, authorities in Estonia and other NATO countries said three Russian fighter jets violated Estonian airspace over the Baltic Sea and remained in it for at least 12 minutes.

Representatives of several NATO countries harshly criticized Russia at the meeting. British foreign policy chief Yvette Cooper said Russia's "irresponsible actions" posed a risk of direct armed conflict between NATO and Russia. "If we need to fight back against aircraft that operate in NATO airspace without authorization, we will do so," she said. Representatives of Estonia, Romania and Poland also voiced condemnation at the meeting. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski warned Russia not to go complaining to the UN Security Council if in the future its missile "or something else" is shot down over the territory of a NATO country.

EU diplomatic chief Kaja Kallas, who also attended the meeting, said the several incidents in less than two weeks could not be a coincidence and said Moscow would continue "provocations" as long as it could get away with them.

Russian representative Dmitri Polyansky said NATO countries had no evidence that Russia had violated their airspace and called what was happening a "theater of the absurd."

No decisions were made at the meeting. On Tuesday, NATO countries are expected to hold consultations at Estonia's request under Article Four of the North Atlantic Treaty.

Michael Waltz attended the Security Council meeting for the first time as a U.S. representative. Previously, he was President Donald Trump's national security aide.
