US President Donald Trump has claimed paracetamol is linked to autism. This led to a drop in the share price of pharmaceutical company Kenvue, which produces the painkiller Tylenol.
This is reported by Financial Time.
The publication writes that the share price of Kenvue fell by 7% to the lowest level since its separation from the parent company Johnson & Johnson. Meanwhile, Tylenol has a significant share of the paracetamol market in the U.S. - it is the best-known brand of the drug in the States.
Reminder, Trump has said that pregnant women and babies should not take Tylenol.
"Just don't take it unless absolutely necessary. Fight hard to avoid taking it," he said.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated a process to update the labeling of paracetamol, including a warning about a possible increased risk of autism and attention deficit disorder. The regulator has sent an advisory letter to doctors advising them to limit the use of paracetamol during pregnancy to treat minor fever.
At the same time, Nature writes that studies do not support a link between paracetamol and autism. But, even if such a link does exist, it is not very minor and does not mean that the drug causes autism.
Kenvue also said that Tylenol is not linked to autism.
"We believe that independent, sound science clearly shows that taking acetaminophen (the name used for paracetamol in the US - ed.) does not cause autism. Acetaminophen is the safest option for pain relief for pregnant women when needed throughout pregnancy," the company said.
