NATO: We Are Prepared To Respond Decisively

The Alliance issued a statement saying.

NATO's North Atlantic Council met for Article 4 consultations and to strongly condemn Russia's violation of Estonian airspace on September 19.

This is according to a statement by the Alliance's press service.

It is noted that NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) informed the Council of the incident when three armed Russian MiG-31 aircraft violated Estonian airspace for more than ten minutes.

"NATO's response was swift and decisive. Alliance aircraft were raised to intercept and escort from Estonian airspace," the statement said.

It noted that the incursion was "part of a broader picture of increasingly irresponsible Russian behavior" as this was the second Article 4 meeting of the North Atlantic Council in two weeks.

The Alliance added that several other NATO members - notably Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Romania - had also been subjected to airspace violations by Russia. "We express our full solidarity with all Alliance members whose airspace has been violated," the NATO statement reads.

"Russia bears full responsibility for these actions, which are escalating, risk miscalculations and endanger lives. They must stop. NATO's response to Russia's reckless actions will continue to be resolute," it said.
