The resolution passed unanimously.
The Lithuanian parliament has empowered the country's armed forces to more quickly and easily neutralize drones that have entered the country's territory and pose a threat to it. This creates additional conditions for the earliest and safest possible response to the increasing frequency of airspace violations by drones of hostile countries, the Seimas said in Vilnius on Tuesday, September 23.
The amendments were voted by 117 deputies, no one abstained or opposed. Henceforth, the Lithuanian Defense Minister or a person authorized by him may order the shooting down of drones that find themselves in a prohibited zone or restricted zone without following the established procedure. Military force will still be used in accordance with international principles and "only when absolutely necessary," the Delfi newspaper quoted the amendments as saying.
The Lithuanian army has so far had the right to use military means against drones only in two cases - if they are used as weapons or have entered prohibited areas and thus endangered objects of state importance.
After the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, the drone threat has increased in recent weeks. The threat has increased in recent weeks after 19 Russian drones flew into Poland in early September, some of them from Belarus. Some were shot down by military aircraft of Poland and its allies.
