Politico: Trump's U-turn On Ukraine Has Pleased Europeans

The issue has become a major topic of discussion on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

U.S. President Donald Trump's sharp U-turn on Ukraine is delighting Europeans amid growing skepticism that he will ever take tougher action against Russian Federation.

"Has Donald Trump suddenly become an ardent supporter of Ukraine?" wondered the Politico. The journalists noted that the question quickly became a major topic of discussion on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York after Trump caught officials off guard with his most pro-Ukrainian statement to date - a bold assertion that Kiev could not only win the war against Russian Federation, but also regain every meter of lost territory.

The Truth Social post, published immediately after Trump's meeting with Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky, is notable for two reasons: first, it contradicted his previous claims that Ukraine could never defeat Russian Federation. Second, it contradicted the White House's previous views on how the war in Ukraine should end, namely through a peace treaty under which Russia would give up all occupied Ukrainian land.

"EU officials trying to make sense of the apparent change oscillated between delight and skepticism, noting that Trump often changes his position and may well do so again after a phone call with another leader," the publication stated.

The journalists noted that the delegation's first reaction was reserved satisfaction at the US president's abrupt new tone.

"This is the most difficult issue so far. But he is always one call away from Putin doing something not so good," one EU official quipped.

The publication wrote that for the Europeans, who had been trying for months to convince Trump that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin was solely responsible for the war, the apparent change in his stance was a kind of vindication of their efforts.

The publication noted that speaking to reporters outside the U.N. Security Council building, Europe's top diplomat Kaya Kallas welcomed Trump's post, saying, "He made a very strong statement that we haven't heard before, and it really shows that we understand each other equally."

But amid the initial surprise and jubilation, some European Union officials and diplomats expressed deeper skepticism, suggesting that Trump's post may be merely an attempt to provoke Putin that will not lead to changes in U.S. policy.

"Indeed, after months of trying to convince Trump to hit the Russian economy with duties or sanctions, hope for U.S. support in Europe is melting away. And faith in Trump's words, however reassuring they may be, is plummeting," the publication stated.
