Europe must defend every square centimeter of territory.
NATO may resort to tough measures in case Russian planes intrude into the alliance's airspace. Europe must defend every part of its territory.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said this in an interview with CNN.
"My opinion is that we must defend every square centimeter of territory. This means that if there is an invasion of airspace, after a warning and a clear signal, of course the option of shooting down a fighter jet invading our skies is left on the table," von der Leyen said.
Although von der Leyen has no authority to give military orders, her words are significant.
"As I said, this is a NATO decision. But I want to be very clear: don't touch our territory," von der Leyen emphasized.
As head of the EU executive, she shapes the strategic perception and positions of European countries.
"Russia is testing us on all fronts. This is a hybrid war that we have seen for many years. It is directed against the democracies of the European Union and other countries. That is why we are fighting back on all fronts," von der Leyen said.
Von der Leyen's statement came after a series of Russian violations of NATO airspace in September.
The incidents were recorded in Poland, Romania and Estonia, putting Europe on high alert.
