Europe has already invested 175 billion in the country's defense and economy.

The EU will continue to support Ukraine with military and economic resources. Europe has already invested 175 billion in the country's defense and economy.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said this in an interview with CNN.

"We will stand ironcladly by Ukraine's side. This also means providing the military capabilities needed to defend the country," von der Leyen said.

Ukraine's struggle and the EU's position

The European Commission chief noted that Ukraine is fighting not only for independence and sovereignty, but also to respect the international order.

She said this war is about respect for the international charter, sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

"The evidence shows conclusively that Putin is the aggressor. He does not want peace, and that is why international rules must be respected," von der Leyen said.

Fon der Leyen commented on Donald Trump's recent statements on the war in Ukraine.

She said the US makes its own decisions, but the EU has always made clear its support for Kiev.

She emphasized that it is Ukraine that should decide which territories to defend and which negotiations to go to.

"The goal is for Putin to sit at the negotiating table because we all want peace," she said.

Energy independence for Europe

The European Commission chief also said Europe's dependence on Russian energy resources would be reduced.

She said coal imports from Russia have been stopped completely and oil supplies have dropped to 3%.

"Three years ago, Europe was heavily dependent on Russian gas. Today we are almost rid of Russian fossil fuels and now we need to complete this process," von der Leyen said.

New sanctions against Russian gas

Fon der Leyen confirmed that the EU is ready to impose sanctions against Russian LNG imports.

She explained that some countries in Europe continue to receive supplies and this should be stopped.

"We have proposed to sanction LNG that enters the European market from Russia. Such supplies should be completely stopped within a few months," the European Commission chief said.
